Typographic Night VII – With Inna Kochkina, Xiaoyuan Gao and Laura Pappa!

On Friday, 15 September 2023 at 18:00, we welcome you to the seventh session of Typographic Nights at Page Not Found, co-curated with Trang Ha and Paulina Trzeciak.

Page Not Found has been organising “Typographic Nights” since 2021. These sessions offer a space for graphic designers and the public to gather around understandings and misunderstandings of the graphic design process. Audience members may bring texts which they would like to see transformed into visual works. These could be either small pieces of their own writing, borrowed fragments, or hand-picked inspirational quotes. The invited designers and typographers materialise these texts into beautiful printed matter on the spot, demonstrating their skills and knowledge and sharing inspiration. Works are printed the same night, available to take home. The evenings reveal the curiosity, fun, improvisation and care that are part of graphic design, from choosing a typeface to applying analog materials, and much more!

To submit your own text to be designed by the guests during this live session, please follow the link!

Inna Kochkina is a graphic designer and visual artist based in Amsterdam. Her practice spans a spectrum from type design and print to installations, with a strong emphasis on typography. Inna’s creative process is often rooted in research, deeply influenced by the social and political impacts on written language. In her current work, she researches Old Cyrillic letterforms and their historical utilization as tools of cultural imposition and linguistic imperialism in Russia and the former USSR.

Xiaoyuan Gao is a Rotterdam-based freelance graphic designer, image-maker, type designer and the initiator of “notyourtype foundry”. In her practice, she loves experimenting with unconventional approaches to type design and typesetting. She sees type design (making custom characters into a font file) as making a tool for typing, just like a customised typewriter. She also enjoys creating visuals out of found images , which allows her to combine typography and imagery in playful ways.

Laura Pappa is a freelance graphic designer based in Amsterdam. Her clients include Kunstverein Toronto, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Museum of Estonian Architecture, project space ROZENSTRAAT, Biennale Matter of Art, and publishers Art Metropole and Valiz. She has previously taught graphic design at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague and ArtEZ Institute of the Arts; currently she is a visiting lecturer in the graphic design MA program at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Next to commissioned work and teaching she occasionally tries her hand at writing, organising events of various kinds and undertaking new hobbies that never catch on.

This Typographic Night is made possible thanks to the support by Pictoright and Stroom Den Haag.
