THE COMPASSIONATE REBELS – Tools for Everyday Living Part 1 by Grace Ndiritu
From 24 January to 23 March 2025, Page Not Found presents The Compassionate Rebels – Tools for Everyday Living Part 1, the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by Grace Ndiritu. Marking the International Day of Education, this exhibition blends radical education, collective action, and immersive art, offering a transformative experience that challenges the way we live together.
In a world defined by political conflict, social unrest, and ecological crises, Grace Ndiritu calls for action: “Write a love letter to your enemy.” Her exhibition is more than an art presentation; it’s an invitation to reflect on how art, collective rituals, and radical education can help heal communities and reimagine our collective way of life.
Art, Education, and Action
Page Not Found is more than a venue for showcasing artists’ books; it’s a vibrant meeting place for art, publishing, and social engagement. Located in The Hague—a city renowned for justice and protest—Page Not Found offers a safe space for reflection and action, especially as public spaces face growing restrictions. In this context, Grace Ndiritu’s work takes on added urgency, moving the conversation indoors to explore how art and education can inspire collective resistance and transformation.
Ndiritu’s Protest Carpets transform the space into a performative arena, inviting visitors to participate in workshops like Eating Together and Decolonising Together. These sessions turn spectators into active participants in a broader process of change, where art becomes a catalyst for social action.
A Special Book Republishing
Central to the exhibition is the second edition of Ndiritu’s much sought-after book, Being Together: A Manual For Living. Out of print for years, this influential publication will now be accessible to a wider audience, amplifying Ndiritu’s vision of radical arts education and community-building. Published by Page Not Found, this edition is a valuable resource for those engaged in reshaping society through collective care and creativity.
Opening
On Friday 24 January 2025, The Compassionate Rebels opens more than just an exhibition; it creates a space for healing, protest, and collaboration. Ndiritu’s work reminds us that the power to transform society lies not just in individual action, but in collective effort.

Van 24 januari tot 23 maart 2025 presenteert Page Not Found The Compassionate Rebels – Tools for Everyday Living Part 1, de eerste solotentoonstelling in Nederland van Grace Ndiritu. Op de Internationale Dag van het Onderwijs opent deze tentoonstelling, waarin radicale educatie, collectieve actie en immersieve kunst samenkomen, en die een transformerende ervaring biedt die onze manier van samenleven fundamenteel uitdaagt.
In een wereld die wordt gekenmerkt door politieke conflicten, sociale onrust en ecologische crises, roept Grace Ndiritu op tot actie: “Schrijf een liefdesbrief aan je vijand.” Haar tentoonstelling is meer dan een kunstpresentatie; het is een uitnodiging om na te denken over hoe kunst, collectieve rituelen en radicale educatie gemeenschappen kunnen helen en ons collectieve leven kunnen herdefiniëren.
Kunst, Educatie en Actie
Page Not Found is meer dan een plek waar kunstenaarsboeken worden getoond; het is een levendige ontmoetingsplaats voor kunst, uitgeverij en sociaal engagement. Gelegen in Den Haag – een stad die bekendstaat om rechtvaardigheid en protest – biedt Page Not Found een veilige ruimte voor reflectie en actie, vooral nu de openbare ruimte steeds meer wordt ingeperkt. In deze context krijgt het werk van Grace Ndiritu extra urgentie, door het gesprek naar binnen te verplaatsen en te onderzoeken hoe kunst en educatie kunnen inspireren tot collectieve verandering en verzet.
Ndiritu’s Protest Carpets transformeren de ruimte tot een performatieve arena en nodigen bezoekers uit deel te nemen aan workshops zoals Eating Together en Decolonising Together. Deze sessies maken van toeschouwers actieve deelnemers aan een breder proces van verandering, waarin kunst fungeert als een katalysator voor sociale actie.
Een Bijzondere Heruitgave
Een centraal element van de tentoonstelling is de tweede druk van Ndiritu’s veelgevraagde boek Being Together: A Manual For Living. Dit invloedrijke werk, dat jarenlang niet verkrijgbaar was, wordt nu opnieuw uitgegeven door Page Not Found en toegankelijk gemaakt voor een breder publiek. Deze heruitgave versterkt Ndiritu’s visie op radicale kunsteducatie en gemeenschapsvorming en biedt een waardevolle bron voor iedereen die zich inzet voor een betere samenleving.
Opening
Op vrijdag 24 januari 2025 opent The Compassionate Rebels meer dan alleen een tentoonstelling; het creëert een ruimte voor heling, protest en samenwerking. Het werk van Ndiritu herinnert ons eraan dat de kracht om de samenleving te transformeren niet alleen ligt in individuele actie, maar juist in collectieve inspanning.

DESIGNING TOGETHER – design session
In this collaborative session, three designers will be developing a design together, drawing from the format of our Typographic Nights. Curated by Trang Hà, designer Ott Metusala will invite two other peers, Gersande Schellinx and César Rogers, to join in an open-ended exchange of ideas and approaches.
Ott Metusala is a graphic designer and educator whose work spans experimental publishing, book design, and typography. His practice explores the intersections of graphic design and research, examining the politics of everyday design as well as its historical contexts. Metusala is a co-founder of Catalog Publishing and works as a bookbinding specialist at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, where he is also a visiting lecturer in graphic design and bookbinding at the Estonian Academy of Arts.
Gersande Schellinx is an Amsterdam-based interdisciplinary artist, writer, and designer. Their work explores collaborative creation and publishing platforms. They are a bookbinding workshop specialist at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and a founding member of the Blob Shop Collective and No Other Option Space. Gersande holds a BA from the TXT department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and an MA in XPUB from Piet Zwart Institute.
César Rogers is a graphic designer and member of fanfare, a design studio and collective that critically explores communication through spatial publishing and shared gatherings. A graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Graphic Design, 2021), César works in letterpress and offset printing at the Rietveld Academie, experimenting with analogue techniques and collaborative publishing methods.
This session is part of “A Season of Peace Building”, a series of workshops accompanying Grace Ndiritu’s The Compassionate Rebels, exploring themes from her book “Being Together”, recently re-published by Page Not Found.

In deze gezamenlijke sessie zullen drie ontwerpers samen een ontwerp ontwikkelen, gebruikmakend van het format van onze Typographic Nights. Gecureerd door Trang Hà zal ontwerper Ott Metusala twee andere collega’s, Gersande Schellinx en César Rogers, uitnodigen om deel te nemen aan een open uitwisseling van ideeën en benaderingen.Ott Metusala is grafisch ontwerper en docent wiens werk zich uitstrekt over experimenteel publiceren, boekontwerp en typografie. Zijn praktijk verkent de raakvlakken van grafisch ontwerp en onderzoek, waarbij hij zowel de politiek van alledaags ontwerp als de historische context ervan onderzoekt. Metusala is medeoprichter van Catalog Publishing en werkt als boekbindspecialist aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie, waar hij ook gastdocent is in grafisch ontwerp en boekbinden aan de Estse Kunstacademie.
Gersande Schellinx is een in Amsterdam gevestigde interdisciplinaire kunstenaar, schrijver en ontwerper. Hun werk onderzoekt collaboratieve creatie en publicatieplatforms. Gersande is specialist op het gebied van boekbinden aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en medeoprichter van Blob Shop Collective en No Other Option Space. WRITING TOGETHER & DECOLONIZING TOGETHER – workshop
This workshop invites participants to engage in a powerful act of reflection and transformation: writing a love letter to their enemies. Through collective writing and discussion, we will explore the complexities of conflict, reconciliation, and decolonial thinking. How can language be a tool for healing? Can a letter bridge divides?

It is our honour to have this workshop being hosted by Fayo Said, a multidisciplinary artist and researcher based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her work focuses on African and Afro-diasporic archives, material and visual culture, with a particular emphasis on the Horn of Africa. Through her practice, she explores the complexities of cultural memory, identity, and the intersection of history and contemporary art.

Deze workshop nodigt deelnemers uit om deel te nemen aan een krachtige daad van reflectie en transformatie: het schrijven van een liefdesbrief aan hun vijanden. Door gezamenlijk te schrijven en te discussiëren verkennen we de complexiteit van conflicten, verzoening en dekoloniaal denken. Hoe kan taal een instrument voor genezing zijn? Kan een brief verdeeldheid overbruggen?Doe mee aan een intieme en tot nadenken stemmende sessie waarin schrijven een ruimte wordt voor dialoog, verzet en verbinding. Het is ons een eer dat deze workshop wordt gegeven door Fayo Said, een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar en onderzoeker uit Amsterdam. Haar werk richt zich op Afrikaanse en Afro-diasporische archieven, materiële en visuele cultuur, met een bijzondere nadruk op de Hoorn van Afrika. FINISSAGE – The Compassionate Rebels
Please join us for the finissage of The Compassionate Rebels by Grace Ndiritu, featuring a special discussion with Judith Wilkinson, a London-based art writer and curator specialising in Samuel Beckett and contemporary art. She is the author of Samuel Beckett: Artist and Curator (Bloomsbury, 2018) and a contributor to Grace’s book Being Together, recently re-published by Page Not Found.
As the exhibition comes to a close, Wilkinson will reflect on its themes and respond to the works on view. This evening offers a chance to gather, exchange thoughts, and engage with the ideas that have shaped this exhibition programme.

KINO NIGHT — Being Part European (premiere)
Please feel welcome to join us for the premiere of “Being Part European” (2024) by Mirelle van Tulder on Wednesday 26 March, 18:00 – 20:00. The film will continue to be screened from 27 to 30 March during our regular opening hours.
During the colonial period, the Netherlands played a central role in the settlement, occupation, and control of territories worldwide. This legacy is embedded in the 470,734 ancestral objects currently held by the Wereldmuseum, of which only 3% are on public display. The remaining 97% are stored in a 4,000 m² depot in ‘s-Gravenzande, accessible to just 27 authorised researchers per year. This facility is one of many across Europe where ethnographic collections are kept out of sight.
These stored objects are more than material artefacts; they hold histories, ancestral knowledge, and displaced narratives that extend beyond museum archives. Removed from their original contexts, they continue to resonate, forming new connections and relationships that challenge ideas of ownership and belonging.
On the premiere night, Being Part European will be followed by a screening of Statues Hardly Ever Smile (1971, 19 min) by Stan Lathan, introduced by Tamarah de Haan, PhD candidate in decolonial sociology. This rarely shown film, brought to our attention by Tamarah, offers a powerful counterpoint to Mirelle’s work, expanding the conversation on archives, representation, and cultural memory.
Mirelle van Tulder (1988, Brazilian/Dutch, born in Aotearoa) is an artist, designer, and researcher. She holds an MA in Fine Art and Design from Werkplaats Typografie (2023) and founded the magazine and platform Roots to Fruits in 2019.
This presentation is one of the instalments of Mal d’Archive—the new public programme of Page Not Found, exploring the space between artistic, archival and publishing practices. This programme will span over several years and encompass events, exhibitions, workshops and residencies.

Kom naar de première van “Being Part European” (2024) van Mirelle van Tulder op woensdag 26 maart van 18:00 – 20:00 uur. De film wordt van 27 tot en met 30 maart tijdens onze reguliere openingstijden vertoond.
Tijdens de koloniale periode speelde Nederland een centrale rol in de vestiging, bezetting en controle van gebieden wereldwijd. Deze erfenis is verankerd in de 470.734 voorouderlijke objecten die momenteel in het bezit zijn van het Wereldmuseum, waarvan slechts 3% voor het publiek te zien is. Deze zelden vertoonde film, onder onze aandacht gebracht door Tamarah, biedt een krachtig tegenwicht voor Mirelle’s werk en breidt het gesprek uit over archieven, representatie en cultureel geheugen.
